When the rest of the country shovels snow, Quartzsite sits in the sun. Mild winter days, cool nights, and granite country that goes on for miles make it the natural winter home for the RV crowd.
The desert here is full of agate, jasper, and turquoise — and the town built its winter personality around it. The legendary January gem shows draw dealers and collectors from across the country, and the vendors stay for the season.
Whether it's a full-hookup RV resort or a free patch of public land, the winter campers come back year after year. They bring markets, music, potlucks and potters — a town that assembles itself from scratch every fall.
The first wagon trains cross the Colorado into Arizona, and Quartzsite grows up around the trails that would later carry Route 66 travelers west.
